Silvano Campeggi: Towards Campaldino The new exhibition is showing at the Oratory of Santa Caterina delle Ruote, a jewel of Tuscan gothic architecture built by the Alberti family in the mid-14th century and splendidly frescoed by the most illustrious artists of the epoch.
In this prestigious site, a selected group of works by maestro Silvano Campeggi will be on display, inspired by the events that led to the battle between the Guelph army of Florence and the Ghibelline troops of Arezzo faithful to the Emperor that took place in the vicinity of Campaldino, around the castle of Poppi on 9th June 1289.
The Florentines exited the city at Porta San Niccolò and arrived at Badia di Ripoli, raising the battle standards and resting before crossing the Arno at Varlungo (Vadum lungum) in the direction of the Casentino. The passage of the army by Pian di Ripoli inspired the creativity of Campeggi, who is famous for having created the artwork for the posters of the most celebrated films of the golden age of Hollywood. More recently, Campeggi has taken an interest in the Middle Ages and the events of the important battles, and has created, with his exceptional narrative ability and uncommon graphic skills, some twenty large colour works in pencil, watercolour, acrylic, and mixed media. These works will be placed in dialogue with the 14th century frescoes of the Oratory. A series of collateral events will enrich the programme, held in various venues such as the Antico Spedale del Bigallo and the Teatro Comunale of Antella. The various initiatives include workshops dedicated to schoolchildren and other participants conducted by Campeggi himself. “No one is born an artist, no one is entirely hopeless at art, and the techniques can be learnt. With a bit of effort, it becomes almost like play.”
