|Toward East and Back|
The production of ceramic items has always been influenced, through Spain, by Islam. The project Sea between peoples is two-year-long and aimed discovering the Mediterranean Sea as a communication element between the cultures who inhabit it.
The first appointment of “The sea between peoples” is an interesting exhibition in Montelupo, entitled Toward East and back, which opens up for the International Ceramic feast.
There are more than 100 paintings, sculptures, graphics and ceramics belonging to the protagonists of Italian Orientalism from mid-XIX century to the 1920s.
Orientalism is the deep sign of the charme Islamic and Ottoman cultures has on the Western areas. This “Oriental idea” reveals itself in sumptuous interiors, precious coatings and it is in the direct confrontation between work of arts, ceramics, in graphics and communications; it will be also important for the Arabic suggestions of Art Nouveau.
