Paris and Photography at the Alinari Museum

A new appointment with great photography at the MNAF of Florence where, starting on January 14th, you can visit the exhibition entitled Paris, City of Photography 1920-1940.
The exhibition is born from a collaboration between the Jeu de Paume of Paris and the Fratelli Alinari Foundation for the History of Photography.

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to the photographic production of this important historical period, the early 1920s, when Paris emerged as the new centre of avant-garde art and, without doubt, as the hub of new photography in Europe.
The French capital was chosen by many photographers from different countries and backgrounds because it stood as a model of modernity and a beacon of economic hope in the aftermath of the First World War but, above all, because it was a haven of political and religious freedom for those forced into exile. alinari2

There are over 100 vintage prints on exhibit, by more than forty photographers who worked in Paris between 1920 and 1940, as well as original documents of the time (magazines, books).
In France, this was a period in which many artists and cultural movements had great influence: French photographers such as Florence Henri, Maurice Tabard, Roger Schall, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Emmanuel Sougez, Pierre Boucher, to mention but a few, rubbed shoulders with foreign artists who became adoptive Parisians by affinity or necessity, such as the Germans Erwin Blumenfeld, Marianne Breslauer and Ilse Bing, the Hungarians André Kertész, Rogi André, François Kollar, Gisèle Freund and Brassaï, the Russians Hoyningen-Huene and Rudomine, the Americans Man Ray and Berenice Abbott.
