Florence is very often a location for movies because of its beautiful views and of the gorgeous surroundings. Some very popular films have been made in Florence in the past years and here you find an account of those that have peculiar romantic stories.
Tea with Mussolini is a 1999 Italian-British semi-autobiographical film directed by Franco Zeffirelli, telling the story of young Italian boy Luca's upbringing by a circle of cultured expatriate English and American women. The Portrait of a Lady is a 1996 film adaptation of Henry James's novel The Portrait of a Lady directed by Jane Campion. It shows some squares in Florence like piazza del Duomo and piazza Santissima Annunziata.
Much Ado About Nothing is a 1993 film based on William Shakespeare's play. It was adapted for the screen and directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also played the role of Benedick. The story plays at the Villa di Vignamaggio in the surroundings of Greve in Chianti. Much Ado About Nothing was one of the most financially successful Shakespeare films ever released. Under the Tuscan Sun is a 2003 film based on Frances Mayes' memoir of the same name. The film was directed by Audrey Wells and starred Diane Lane. The plto is based on the stay of an American woman in Cortona, but some scenes are in Florence, piazza del Duomo.

A Room with a View is a 1985 British drama film directed by James Ivory and produced by Ismail Merchant. The film is a close adaptation of E. M. Forster's novel of the same name. It plays in Florence and in particular in two different hotels: the Pensione Quisisana near Ponte Vecchio, that was badly damaged in 1993 and closed; and Pensione Annalena, in via Romana.
