The local railways transport is combined with the city bus (ATAF) network, so that it is possible to take local trains – within the municipal territory – using an ATAF single ticket.

From the central railway station of S. M. Novella, you can reach the stations of:

- Castello
- Firenze Rovezzano
- Le Cure
- Firenze S. Marco Vecchio
- Porta al Prato

Because of its central position in Tuscany, it is quite easy to take a train from Florence to other cities: it takes one hour to reach Pisa, Viareggio, Lucca, Siena. Less than one hour to Arezzo, Pistoia, Prato..

Departing from Florence railway stations, local trains can reach many other tourist sites and towns, both on the line Firenze-Pisa (Firenze Rifredi, Le Piagge, Signa, Lastra a Signa, Montelupo, Empoli and from Empoli to Siena via Castelfiorentino), and in the direction Firenze-Arezzo (Firenze Campo Marte, Rovezzano, Compiobbi, Sieci, Pontassieve, S. Ellero, Rignano, Incisa and Figline Valdarno) or Firenze-Mugello, direction Borgo San Lorenzo via Pontassieve or via Vaglia and San Piero a Sieve.
