Florence Nightingale, whose nursing work in the Crimean War was an inspiration in the setting up of the Red Cross, has a specific link with the city of Florence. Her parents, William Edward and Frances Nightingale, a wealthy pair of English newly-weds, chose Italy for a long honeymoon.
Their two daughters were both born in the course of the two years the Nightingales spent in the peninsula: Parthenope, who was born in Naples in 1819, and Florence, who was born in Florence on 12 May 1820.
