When we speak of Tuscan or Florentine wine we immediately think of “Chianti”, but we may do well to clarify what this word really means. Chianti is a geographical area in the provinces of Florence and Siena, comprising whole or part of 8 communes: Barberino Val d’Elsa, Greve in Chianti, San Casciano and Tavarnelle in Val di Pesa in the province of Florence, and Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole and Radda in Chianti in the province of Siena.

A short guide to the wines of the FLORENCE area, with excursions into the territory of SIENA, PRATO and PISTOIA: it is APT's latest publication.
Beautiful vineyards, alternating with olive groves and woodland, characterize the landscape around the capital of Tuscany: with the exception, in fact, of the plain to the west of the city, once marshy and now heavily built up, in the other directions the abundance of vines makes an immediate visual impact, an expression of a marked vocation for winegrowing in the Florence area and of the high quality of the wines made here.
If you enjoy wine but do not understand what DOC or DOCG or IGT means, if you want to ask for the right wine with the right food, this is what you should not miss.

The Strade del Vino, or wine trails, were set up in accordance with Regional Law no. 69 (1996). Basically they are itineraries through those wine-producing areas of the region that are protected by the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) appellations or the looser Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) category.
