The part of the town on the left bank of the river Arno is called Oltrarno.
It's a quarter of the old city centre as ancient and as full of masterpieces as the right bank;here you can experience real life, because a lot of people are still living in this part of Florence.
santospiritoYou can cross the river and go to the Oltrarno district if you want to visit Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, or the splendid Renaissance church of Santo Spirito or the fascinating frescoes by Masaccio housed in the church Santa Maria del Carmine.
But the Oltrarno is the heartland of artisan Florence, a labyrinth of shops and workshops. The applied arts find here a realization in the artistic craftsmanship; a tradition of ancient trades.
You can discover it by simply walking around:
via dei Serragli, via Romana, Borgo San Frediano, via della Chiesa, via Santo Spirito, via del Leone. A dedalus of small streets that connect the big squares: piazza Tasso, piazza del Carmine, piazza santo Spirito and piazza Pitti.
The Oltrarno is an open-air museum and an extraordinary heritage of traditions : working of gold, of silver and of precious stones; metal working, ancient paintings restoration, made-to-measure shoes. Here you can find gilding with gold leaf, here ancient glass can be restored; new ceramics are created and ancient ones are restored.
Curios articles are created here, as f.i. wooden forms for hats carved by hand.
A very old traditon of bookbinding can be found in the Oltrarno; as far as precious metals are concerned, some artisans still work by using the lost wax casting.
Oltrarno is a proposal to discover the other Florence; a different but true aspect of the town.
