In the green landscape surrounding Florence, at the Oratory of Santa Caterina, there is a curious exhibition.

oratorioThe Oratory was built around the mid-fourteenth century by the family Alberti, it shows a simple and geometrical architectonic style and inside there is a wealth of magnificent frescoes and decorations: an explosion of shapes and colours narrating the life of the princess martyr Saint Catherine of Alexandria, initiated by the Maestro di Barberino and by Pietro Nelli, although the works reach the height of their impetus by the hand of Spinello Aretino.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria, also known as Saint Catherine of the Wheel and The Great Martyr Saint Catherine lived in Egypt between the 3rd and 4th century : the exhibition going on is the result of a cooperation between the Municipality of Bagno a Ripoli and the Istituto Papirologico "G. Vitelli" of the University of Florence.

The name of the exhibition is The Egypt of Saint Catherine and it is open until June 11: it builds on episodes of the life of the Saint showed on the frescoes of the Oratory and it gives back life in Egypt in the 3rd century.

This exhibition sets out documentary and literary papyri as well as archaeological material from Graeco-Roman Egypt in order to reproduce the social milieu and the cultural context which Catherine could have been part of as realistically as possible.
60 items on show, half of them papyri dating back to the 3rd and 4th century and coming from Egypt but owned by the Istituto Papirologico Vitelli of Florence: the activities of the Institute are aimed mainly at the research and the spreading in the field of Papyrology, according to the goals pointed out in its Statute.
