The San Firenze complex, once the city’s main courthouse, now has a new function as the home of the prestigious Centro Franco Zeffirelli, which plays multiple roles as the foundation’s office, school, museum and exhibition venue.

zeffirelli

The Museum contains over 250 of director Zeffirelli’s works, including scene sketches, drawings and fashion plates. The permanent display is located on the first floor and is divided chronologically into sections for theater, musical opera and cinema. Organized by theme and artist, it illustrates the evolution of stage scenography and film production, with a primary focus on the main phases of Zeffirelli’s artistic career, presented by means of scene photos.

Luchino Visconti, Richard Burton, Maria Callas and von Karajan are among the many artists whom Franco Zeffirelli worked with and befriended. His career coincided with the main developments in the history of performing arts in the 20th century, above all as director of works of opera and classical theater, but also including involvement with the big and little screens. On the whole, Zeffirelli is the Italian director with the greatest fame in international artistic circles.

The multi-faceted Center thus contains 70 years’ worth of artistic treasures collected over the course of an entire lifetime and delineating a long and prestigious career. The Center aims to be a point of reference for training in the performing arts as well as a cultural site. The oratory of San Firenze will be used for screenings and concerts: given its suitability as a musical hall, with 120 seats and a maximum capacity of 150 persons, the oratory will become a venue for concerts, film festivals and workshops. The Maestro’s personal library includes 10,000 volumes as well as a significant collection of periodicals.

Franco Zeffirelli is from Florence, where he was born in 1923. The Centro Internazionale per le Arti dello Spettacolo Franco Zeffirelli, under the aegis of this well-known Florentine, has gathered this unique artistic and cultural patrimony and put it at the disposal of the city.

The Museum will also contain several additional facilities: a tea room, a bar/restaurant and a bookshop.
