This is the largest solo exhibition that has ever been dedicated to a sculptor in Florence: the sculptor is Fritz König, recently dead,

kugelThe current retrospective will for the first time show all of König’s work phases, including the especially interesting creations from the over four decades of the second half of König’s life, in which the artist withdrew entirely from the art market and almost completely from the art world.

Particularly known for his work The Sphere for the World Trade Center Plaza (1968–1972) that was not damaged on September 11, 2001, Fritz König is the most important German sculptor of the second half of the twentieth century and as one of the greatest artists of the past century.

His works on display in Floence are distributed between the Boboli gardens and the Uffizi Gallery. Big statues at the Boboli Gardens, sketches and models at the Uffizi.

Works are made of bronze, stone and corten; the themes or we could say the Leitmotiv of his works are loneliness, love ecstasy, horses, the Holocaust.

The exhibition Fritz König in Florence. A Retrospective (1924 – 2017) is on from June 21 to October 18.
