A great exhibition about Andrea del Verrochio and his famous atelier, where many important artists were formed, starting from the young Leonardo da Vinci.

Spread in two locations (the main one at Palazzo Strozzi, and the special section at the Bargello), this exhibition will make you admire a series of masterpieces verrocchiosmallnot only by Andrea Verrochio himself, but also by Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Perugino, Desiderio da Settignano and many others. Verrocchio's workshop was the most important Renaissance atelier in Florence,  between 1460 and 1490, the age of Lorenzo de’ Medici “the Magnificent”.

In this studio artists may experiment different techniques: painting, bronze casting, marble sculpture etc. At Palazzo Strozzi visitors can admire Verrocchio’s celebrated masterpieces, like the  Puttino with a dolphin (from Palazzo Vecchio), the Madonna and Child series ( from the London National Gallery), the bronze statue of David and the marble bust of the Dama col mazzolino (“the Lady with a bouquet”, from the Bargello). In the Bargello Museum’s section, however, it will be possible to appreciate the Incredulità di San Tommaso (“the incredulity of St. Thomas” a bronze group from Orsanmichele Church), as well as a rare wooden crucifix.

One of the areas of the exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi is significantly dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, on the occasion of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of his death. It was actually Verrocchio who recognized Leonardo’s talent, when he saw some of his drawings shown to him by Leonardo’s father, Ser Piero da Vinci. This section of the exhibition shows a series of Leonardo’s works created in Verrocchio’s atelier, such as some amazing studies (hands, draperies) and also an absolute revelation: the splendid Madonna and Child from the Victoria and Albert Musuem, a terracotta sculpture recently attributed to the young Leonardo by Francesco Caglioti, one of the exhibition curators.

Even if the Baptism of Christ (a fundamental painting, that bears witness of the cooperation "Leonardo-Verrocchio") is visible at the Uffizi, it is virtually within the exhibition thanks to a sophisticated touch screen.

Special thanks to some of the most important museums in the world (Metroplitan Museum of New York, National Gallery of Art of Washington DC, Louvre, Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam, Victoria and Albert Museum of London, Uffizi Galleries) for their loans that made possible this exhibition!

In addition, the exhibition wants to invite everyone to discover Verrocchio’s places of interest in the city, for a better comprehension of his heritage: a legacy that influenced a whole generation of artists, starting from Leonardo da Vinci himself.

For the owners of Palazzo Strozzi ticket, there will be a reduction for the Bargello Museum, and vice versa.
