The Roman Pilgrimage Routes of Tuscany

A recent undertaking called Vie Romee (Roman Pilgrimage Routes) is available in the form of a series of interactive online walking routes designed for the modern pilgrim, providing a new way to explore these historic routes.

The Vie Romee project encompasses the provinces of Arezzo, Florence and Siena as part of an initiative to highlight the historic importance of Tuscany’s ancient pilgrim routes.

This collection of itineraries (available for 7,50 euros in specialty book stores) provides maps (scale: 1: 50.000) of walking routes on the medieval pilgrim roads, and includes information on suggested legs, places of historic and artistic interest, special features of the countryside, local curiosities and places to rest and eat, as well as practical and technical information on each route.

The first map illustrates, on one side, the various itineraries from Florence to Arezzo along the Via Aretina and the Strada dei Setteponti (the Road of the Seven Bridges) and, on the other side, the route from Florence to Siena taking Via Bolognese.

The second map documents the route from Florence to Siena via the Valdelsa area, and, on its reverse, the way from Florence to Siena going through Chianti.

It also includes an urban Florentine itinerary, going from Porta San Gallo (near Piazza della Libertà) to Porta Romana, passing through the oldest sections of Florence in which the historic spedali (hospitals) of the city lie.

Moreover, all of the maps online are continuously updated as additional trail information is acquired.
In fact, the website www.vieromee.it assists travelers at every step of their journey, from the planning stages to the return home, thanks to a series of advanced multimedia functions and extensive website content, which includes over 1,500 files of text, images, videos, documents and up-to-date GPS coordinates.

Through Google Maps images (which reference the site’s archived GPS information), the user can explore the Tuscan countryside and look at itineraries, specific legs and points of interest (POI) all from a computer or mobile phone, creating a completely personalized itinerary.

Soon the mapped itineraries online will be available for purchase in a printed version at the tourist information office at Via Cavour 1r.
