Pardon and delicacies

0092-as_pecorinoWhat feasts in the lands of the Arno! Besides the view of the luxuriant Valdarno countryside, old and young alike will enjoy the gastronomic products of this area.

Being a territory made up of valleys near the river – belonging in part to the province of Florence and in part to the province of Arezzo –  the countryside is, naturally, flourishing and  gives many products that serve as the basic ingredients of  typical dishes for various gastronomic choices: oil, wine, vinsanto, sausages and salami, pork and beef roasts , the famous Valdarno roast chicken, cheeses, homemade bread, jam tarts.

An itinerary through the area's typical traditions that passes from the sacred to the profane: especially in the month of September, during the so-called Feste del Perdono (Feasts of the Pardon) fairs, that move through the various towns in the zone and, in times past, were dedicated to the penitent, in addition to the amusement parks there are stands with an infinite variety of specialities and 'tasty morsels' (the stand with porchetta, the ones with cheese, or cured meats, or homemade bread and schiaccia flatbread, or vegetables, or cotton candy, and so on), for a 'full-immersion programme' in the fun and food that will accompany, in tastes and memories, those who stock up on things to take home to fill their own pantries.

Perhaps some will decide to remain a while longer to try out the many restaurants and trattorie   and will want to stay at one of the area's numerous accommodation facilities.

At Incisa Valdaro, the "Perdono" is held around the third Sunday of September, whereas at Rignano, around the forth.

The other Feste del Perdono are celebrated in the area of the Montagna Fiorentina, and around Arezzo and Siena, in particular, Reggello (Montagna Fiorentina), Castelfranco di Sopra, Laterina, Loro Ciuffenna, Montevarchi, Terranova Bracciolini (Arezzo) and Radda in Chianti (Siena).

How to get to most of these towns? Even by train; towns in the Florentine Valdarno have stations along the Florence-Arezzo-Rome line.

Those travelling by car will find exits at the Incisa, Reggello Ovest and Valdarno toll gates of the A1 Autostrada (direction Florence-Arezzo-Rome); or, wanting to avoid the motorway while going further into the territory, when leaving Florence you can opt for the Statale 67 going in the direction of Pontassieve-Arezzo.
