Filippo Lippi’s Adoration of the Child (1463) has returned to the Uffizi following an eight-month restoration. After having been on display for a few days in the Church of San Pier Scheraggio, since 7 April it has been back in its customary place in the room of the Uffizi that contains the works of the Lippi family. The restoration, which cost 34,000 euro, was financed by the Friends of Uffizi Gallery Inc, the American branch of the Amici degli Uffizi. The restoration of the Adoration, known as the Camaldoli Altarpiece, was carried out by Daniele Rossi under the direction of Alessandro Cecchi. The Friends of Uffizi Gallery Inc, which paid for the work, has announced its intention to finance the restoration of another work by Lippi, the Annalena Altarpiece. After going on display in the medieval church of San Pier Scheraggio, which is inside the Uffizi, as from 7 April visitors can see the Camaldoli Altarpiece in its usual place in the gallery. The removal of a layer of gluey, resinous paint and distorting touching up has now made it possible to fully appreciate Filippo Lippi’s mastery in depicting the constrast between the gloom of the landscape, inspired by the forests of Camaldoli, the location of the celebrated hermitage in the province of Arezzo, and the brightness of the faces and clothes of the Madonna and the Child.
