The area immediately outside Florence and westwards in the direction of the sea is prevalently flat, while in the other directions the terrain becomes hillier as one moves away from the city, culminating in Monte Morello to the north and Poggio di Firenze to the south.

It was once an extensive, privately-owned farm but when it was donated to the town, it was turned into a public park.
