Looking for chestnuts

Chestnuts are the stars of the autumn at the mountain villages of the Montagna fiorentina.

During the past centuries sweet chestnuts were the only available food fot the poor people of the mountains. Chestnuts where stored and 0529-as_castagniused dried or cooked. A wonderful culinary tradition is connected with this fruit

If you want to follow all events about chestnuts here is a program entitled Il cammino dei marroni that will be running in various places of the Montagna until December.

The first event is at Comunello di Casale (San Godenzo) on 16 October, with the Marronata, (information: tel.  055 8373826 ).

Then it is on to Castagno di Andrea on 23 and 30 October for the Ballottata sagra del marrone, featuring whole boiled chestnuts, roast chestnuts, cakes and chestnut beer.

The location is also worth because of its beautiful woods, where one can easily take a walk. Iinformation: tel. 055 8396636 – 0558373826.

The programme rounds off at San Godenzo in December with Dal riccio alla farina (from husks to flour) where a host of food stands will serve simple, hearty chestnut-based products.
